[MBArtist] Look Ma, I'm a Star!

[Claire] Surprised and pleased to win the peer-nominated First-Year Rising Star Award at our MBA End Of Year Banquet.

"The rising star award goes to someone who has gotten involved with Smith from day one, through Track Representative responsibilities and now through a position on the MBA Association. Her enthusiasm for presentation skills, communication, and marketing is apparent through the dedication and creativity she demonstrates within a variety of roles and clubs, and she does it all with humility, positivity, and contagious laughter. Please join me in congratulating Claire Almand."

[MBArtist] Hisaoka Fellowship

[Claire] Thrilled to continue working for MPOWER Financing this summer as a Hisaoka Fellow! ✨

"The Hisaoka Fellowship Program is designed for first year Smith MBA students who are highly interested in entrepreneurial innovation and/or startups. The program is a partnership between the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship and the Office of Career Services. In order to be selected as a Hisaoka Fellow, students must secure summer internships with VC- or angel-funded startups and early stage companies. Through the Hisaoka Fellowship program, startups benefit from increased access to Smith MBA talent. Students benefit from experience with the challenges of forming and growing new ventures. The Dingman Center provides each Hisaoka Fellow a $5,000 stipend to supplement students’ summer salaries. This presents an excellent opportunity for startups which otherwise may lack sufficient funds to compete for MBA interns."

[MBArtist] Timeless

In February of 2017, I, a first-year board member of the PCC, sneakily approached the current president, Kevin Hannigan. I said, "Kevin, tell me about the PCC TEDx Talk event on March 26th." He replied nothing was planned and they were considering canceling it. I offered to take ownership of the event, and Timeless was born!

This event was crafted carefully from scratch - the concept, design, nominations, talk development, practice and event planning. It's invigorating to see your ideas come to life!

Three secrets to every good event?

  1. Background music - happy white noise
  2. Delicious food - be thoughtful
  3. Have fun - it's infectious

The event was successful beyond my wildest hopes. I'm extremely excited to reproduce the effort this Fall 2017 and Spring 2018.

"Nailed It - The TED event was INCREDIBLE today-- you did an awesome job pulling together the event and speakers. [Another student] and I couldn't stop talking about how much we enjoyed it on our walk out. It was awesome-- cheers to you, my friend!"

[MBArtist] MBA Escapes Van Munching

[Claire] The photo journey of an MBA who ventured forth from the infamous Van Munching Hall to explore the rest of campus.

I explored the University of Maryland campus early one Sunday morning; I've never seen the campus so empty.

Experience – My career in digital marketing has prepared me with the technical skill to improve upon our class’ digital presence. As a first-year track representative, I have insight into how the MBAA is managed and the processes necessary for success.

Transparency – Under my purview, the weekly MBAA newsletter will include a new section, “The MBAA Meeting Notes.” This rotating features with include both a summary and a click-through link to the weekly MBAA meeting minutes, as well as a section for your feedback.

Creativity – I offer my vision and digital voice to the MBAA newsletter and general communications. I will assist clubs in documenting events and creating media-rich websites and marketing materials.
